My Problem with niching down.

That’s me 4 years back.

It seems that every established creator out there is giving the same advice; to niche down and that may be something that I am currently struggling with.

Whenever someone searches for marketing or “ content creator career ” advice, the thing that comes up the most is the concept of “ finding your niche ” or ‘niching down’.

What does niching down even mean?

Niching down means having a clear focus on who the target audience is and aligning the content to match their interest.

So what are examples of niches?

A niche is similar to a category or genre. You can imagine it as someone searching on Google for a specific genre of content. When they search, they should know what to expect from the keywords they use.

Common niches include — Traveling, Beauty, Fashion, Health & Fitness, Lifestyle, Parenting, Business, Music, Photography and Food.

Many years ago, I started producing content for the “ Lifestyle “ niche. I would create vlogs and talk about my life or create challenges to make content. I enjoyed the process but it didn’t gain any traction.

I was young and eager at the time, and I did not understand what it meant that nothing worth having ever comes easy. My main focus was on vanity metrics, and I lacked consistency. I didn’t know it was impossible to reach a certain number of subscribers in a short amount of time.

As I grew older, I became interested in creating short films, music videos, and food videos. To create the videos, I would write a script, create a plan, and enlist the help of my classmates. Most of them would be reluctant to help and would rather focus on school.

Fast forward to today, I am still struggling with my niche. Would it be more beneficial for me to create content based on the clients I am looking to attract, or should I create content according to my passion? That’s the dilemma I am in.

As part of my business, I offer a variety of services to business owners and individuals, and one of those services involves using social media to reach an audience. Despite my understanding of how social media platforms work, it all boils down to the business or individual’s niche. It really makes a difference if the marketer has knowledge of the particular niche.

I’m still finding my way at 19, and being a creator isn’t exactly a linear career. In 2022, I’m looking forward to creating content that is uniquely me and breaking free from this dilemma.
